What is a DBS check for care work?

Updated 29 October 2026

Almost every care job needs a DBS check before you start. This guide explains what a DBS check is, which kind care work needs, and how to avoid waiting for a new one every time you change jobs.

What a DBS check is

DBS stands for the Disclosure and Barring Service. A DBS check shows an employer relevant information from police records, and for some roles whether you are barred from working with vulnerable adults or children. It helps care providers keep the people they support safe.

DBS checks cover England and Wales. Scotland uses Disclosure Scotland and Northern Ireland uses AccessNI.

Which level care work needs

Most care roles need an enhanced DBS check, usually with a check of the adults' barred list. Some roles that involve children also need the children's barred list. Your employer decides which check the role needs.

Who applies for it

You cannot apply for an enhanced DBS check yourself. Your employer, or an umbrella body working for them, starts the application and you fill in your details and show your ID. Many providers pay for it, and some refund it after you have worked for them for a while.

How long it takes

Many checks come back within a few weeks, but some take longer, for example if you have lived at several addresses. Some providers let you start shadow shifts or training while you wait, under supervision.

The DBS Update Service

The Update Service lets you keep your DBS certificate up to date so a new employer can check it online instead of asking for a new one. It costs £16 a year and you must join within 30 days of your certificate being issued.

If you move between care jobs, it is usually worth joining. On Amica Connect you can add your DBS details to your profile once and share them with every provider you apply to.

Common questions

Does a criminal record stop me working in care?

Not always. It depends on what is on the record and the role. Providers must consider each case fairly. Be honest on your application.

Does a DBS check expire?

A certificate has no official expiry date, but most providers ask for a recent one or check it through the Update Service.
