Care worker interview questions and how to answer them

Updated 29 October 2026

Care interviews are usually friendly and practical. Providers want to know that you are kind, reliable and safe. Here are the questions that come up most, and how to prepare.

Common questions

  • Why do you want to work in care?
  • Tell us about a time you helped someone who was upset or confused.
  • How would you protect someone's dignity during personal care?
  • What would you do if you were worried a person was being harmed?
  • How would you handle a person who refuses care?
  • How do you cope with a busy shift?
  • Are you able to work weekends, nights or at short notice?

How to answer well

Use real examples, even from outside work, such as caring for a relative or helping in your community. Say what happened, what you did and what the result was.

For safeguarding questions, the key answer is that you would report your concern to your manager straight away, follow the provider's safeguarding policy and write down what you saw. You do not need to investigate yourself.

Show you understand person-centred care: every person has their own wishes, routines and choices, and you respect them.

What to bring

  • Photo ID and proof of your right to work
  • Proof of address
  • Your DBS certificate or Update Service details if you have them
  • Any training certificates

Questions to ask them

  • What training and induction do you give new starters?
  • Will I do shadow shifts before working alone?
  • How are rotas set, and how much notice do I get?
  • How do you support staff after a difficult shift?

Common questions

What should I wear to a care interview?

Smart, simple clothes are fine. You do not need a suit.

Will there be a test?

Some providers ask a few scenario questions or a short written task. It is not a pass or fail exam.
