The Care Certificate explained
Updated 29 October 2026
If you are new to care in England, your employer will almost certainly ask you to complete the Care Certificate. This guide explains what it is, what it covers and what comes after it.
What the Care Certificate is
The Care Certificate is a set of standards that new health and social care workers in England are expected to meet. It is not a formal qualification, but it shows you have the knowledge and skills to give safe, kind care. It is usually completed during your induction with your employer.
The 15 standards
- Understand your role
- Your personal development
- Duty of care
- Equality, diversity and human rights
- Work in a person-centred way
- Communication
- Privacy and dignity
- Fluids and nutrition
- Awareness of mental health, dementia and learning disabilities
- Safeguarding adults
- Safeguarding children
- Basic life support
- Health and safety
- Handling information
- Infection prevention and control
How long it takes
Most new starters complete it in around 12 weeks alongside their normal shifts. It mixes training with being observed at work by a senior colleague or assessor.
If you change jobs
Keep a copy of your certificate. A new employer may accept it, though many will check your knowledge and give you their own induction.
What comes next
After the Care Certificate, many care workers take a Level 2 Diploma in Adult Care, then a Level 3 Diploma for senior or team leader roles. Some providers fund these, so ask at interview.
Common questions
Is the Care Certificate a qualification?
The Care Certificate itself is a set of standards, not a regulated qualification, but most employers in England expect new care workers to complete it. Skills for Care has also introduced a separate Level 2 Adult Social Care Certificate qualification based on the same standards.
Do I have to pay for the Care Certificate?
It is normally provided by your employer as part of your induction.
